1. Our Saturday Program: On Saturdays children from our OVC program come into the centre for games, educational activities, psychosocial support and lunch. This program costs approximately $60 per month. This year 65 children participated. That comes to not quite a dollar per child. Certainly a worthwhile investment.
2. Our University Students: In 2017 we will have two students in university that need financial support. In the past, both have received assistance from the government. For the coming year, that assistance has been reduced. Our students are also encountering numerous "extra" expenses such as field study, transportation, supplies, etc. . To ensure that they are able to finish their next year of studies we need to raise approximately $1,000 each. One is studying to be a teacher, the other is in medical school - both professions that will help others and the development of the country.
3. "Food by Prescription" Program: This program provides beans and high protein flour to our adults who are HIV + but have a low body mass index (clinically underweight). The beans are provided by a local donor but the high protein flour costs us an average of $475 per month. Currently 160 people are benefiting from this program. Since the rains have been sparse we are expecting that the harvest will also be less than what is needed causing food prices to go up. When this happens many people skip meals. This affects their treatment since the antiretroviral drugs must be taken with food - twice a day. When people are only eating one meal a day, it means they are missing half of their dose. This not only limits the effectiveness of the drugs but can also lead to drug resistant strains of the virus. Food is an essential part of the treatment program. For approximately $6 a month we can provide 2 kilos of high protein flour. With further funding we would like to double the amount they receive.
These are some of our more critical services which currently do not have designated funding. They are paid for through the donations of friends and family. Together we can ensure that these services continue, enabling the children and adults to have healthier and more productive lives.
